How can I lower my price?

Unlike many services, customers can do a lot of preparation for a move that will save money.  Since many moving companies charge per hour, one of the most expensive parts is packing and boxing, especially if there are many small items.  The Gurus leave it up to customers, and we understand when clients just don’t have the time or ability to box and wrap.  That said, we also know that many customers are budget conscious, and in those cases, we recommend that the more a customer can secure their items safely in boxes, and the more they can create a clean environment for the movers, the faster the job will go.   Packing and boxing can save a customer substantially, and we’re happy to provide advice on how to do that well.

How can I avoid overspending?

Most contracts are on an hourly basis.  This means that the fewer hours it takes to move, the less you’ll pay.  There are several steps you can take to keep your move to the five-hour minimum.  The Gurus always recommend that you declutter and organize.  It is usually easier and quicker for movers to transport your larger items, so if you can pack your smaller items, such as objects in dressers, drawers, cabinets, and shelves, that will also the movers time and could save you money.

Is it okay to haggle with a moving company?

Customers often negotiate with a moving company, which can result in cost savings. Customers may want to research average rates and gather multiple quotes to compare prices and services. Always approach the negotiation politely, highlight competitor offers, and be open to compromises to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.  Keep in mind that while the estimates may seem high, moving companies face many “hidden” and expensive costs including labor costs, vehicle expenses, insurance, licensing and permits, advertising and marketing, and taxes.

What is the cheapest day of the week to move?

I just got an estimate from a moving company that is much lower than the others.  What’s going on? 

Be wary!  there is a good chance that it is an illegitimate business, may not be properly or legally licensed, and may not have adequate insurance. To verify that the company is licensed and insured, you can usually find this information on their website or by asking them directly. You can also check with your South Carolina Department of Transportation (https://ors.sc.gov/consumers/transportation/transportation-faqs) to confirm licensing status.  Some other ways to avoid scams or risking your items to loss or theft:

1. Verify address and contact information.
2. Read online reviews.
3. Ask for documentation including a written contract, terms and conditions, and an inventory of your possessions.

Won’t it be cheaper to rent a truck and move myself?

This depends on many factors, especially the number of items you need to pack and relocate.  But, if you have enough to fit in a rental truck, or can haul it all with a few trips in a van, there may be four reasons to still hire the pros.
